Wendy’s Song – Steve Sturm
(Chris Compton , Nile “Big Daddy” Peaytt) (Steve Sturm) Copyright 2005

She wears the hat to hide her disease
But it doesn’t change the reality
She puts on a show and paints on a smile
But you can see the fear in her eyes

And at night she cries herself to sleep
Not sure what the morning will bring
And just when it seems like all hope is lost
She finds a way to keep on hanging on

The doctor said that her time is borrowed
I’ve gotta love her like there’s no tomorrow
I know she’s scared and feels alone
Just like a prisoner in her own home

And as she finally drifts off to dream
I pull up a chair just to watch her breathe

The Story Behind the Song

Wendy thought it would a good idea to write a cancer song. At the time, I was trying to keep myself together. Wendy had cancer in both lungs, across her shoulders, in her spine and was confined to a wheelchair at the time. As usual...I said no, but wrote the song two days later with long time friend Chris Compton. To my surprise, it was like a huge weight was lifted off of my chest. Kinda like therapy I guess. Deep down I was afraid if it would offend Wendy. I wanted it to be special, this was my gift to her. This was my way of letting her memory live on. As she heard the first recording, she sat in her wheelchair with her head hanging. The tears were just rolling down her cheek. She said, "you really do understand" and gave me a kiss. I asked my friend Steve, who plays with Travis Tritt, if he could help me record a full demo. We were in a rush...she became bed bound. No feeling from the chest down. Could barely feed herself. As I watched her fade…I prayed she would get to hear her song in all it's glory. And she did, just days before she died. Thank you Chris and Steve. Wendy was the strongest person I ever met. Although I'm finally moving on, I still miss her and she still inspires me to write. She changed the lives of everyone she met. How many of us can say that? You go girl!
